"Breastfeeding is an instinctual and natural act, but it is also an art that is learned day by day.
The reality is that almost all women can breastfeed, have enough milk for their babies and learn how to overcome problems both large and small. It is almost always simply a matter of practical knowledge and not a question of good luck. "

Meet Our Consultants

IBCLC's are unique in that we interact with both the mother and the baby. IBCLC's are an integral part of the health care team, communicating with all your other health care providers to coordinate and manage the breastfeeding issues concerning you and your baby.

Lillian M. Davis, Intern
Lillian came to our office as a client a few years ago, successfully breastfed her now 2 year old daughter and came back to us as office support.  She had experience with insurance, office management and the most wonderful "people skills".  She was a perfect fit!!  After working with us for a year, she decided to make the committment to become a lactation consultant.  She's certainly obtained a lot of "on the job" training, she is doing self-study and formal study with us as she prepares for the board exam in 2012.  She is passionate about the bond between mothers and babies from breastfeeding.

Liz Flight ~ RN, IBCLC

Liz Flight has helped mothers and babies with breastfeeding for over 30 years. Mom to three terrific breastfed (grown) children and a breastfed grandson, Liz is a Navy wife and is focused on the needs of military families. She has developed lactation programs for several Navy hospitals over the last 15 years and has provided guidance for policy makers concerning support of the military mother returning to active duty.

Liz continues to provide professional education for nursing students, military residency programs, lactation interns and is an often sought guest speaker. She has been board certified as an IBCLC since 1993. A former charter member of the Executive Board of the USLCA (United States Lactation Consultant Association), a co-chair for the Virginia Breastfeeding Taskforce, she is active on the executive board in her regional chapter, TALCA (Tidewater Area Lactation Consultant Association) and has recently chartered a new USLCA chapter for the military- MiLCA (Military Lactation Consultant Association).  She completed her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing, Summa Cum Laude at Hampton University, May 2011.  Her work with Tidewater Lactation Group has sparked a new non-profit organization, A Mother Care Center.

Liz tells the story of coming to the lactation profession “backwards”. While growing up she always wanted to be a midwife, however, as a young mother in the early 1980’s when the breastfeeding rate was about 10%, she was the only nurse working at her hospital who had ever breastfed. She was therefore assigned to work in the nursery and help the new moms. Liz found it rewarding to help these young families and felt even more passionate about spreading information and education to others who could make a difference. Liz continues to help moms and to train the next generation of nurses and doctors. She hopes that with today's research, modern technology and the visibility of breastfeeding in public, mothers of this generation will embrace motherhood and breastfeeding.
